Recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics used data collected from 49 studies with a total of 13,559 participants from 24 countries, including 21 developing countries to show that poverty was the main reason for youth homelessness in developing countries and family conflict was the main reason in developed countries.
Youth delinquency is not a majoy cause of youth homelessness as commonly believed.

Youth needing housing will benefit from a partnership between Oak Bay United Church and Threshold Housing Society.
There was some exciting news this week for those dealing with young people who need safe, supportive housing in Victoria. Oak Bay United Church and Threshold Housing Society announced that they are planning on joining forces to create eight new housing units for homeless youth.
A Civil Forfeiture Grant has been awarded to Threshold Housing through the province’s Civil Forfeiture Office. This funding is designed to assist BC organizations with preventing violence against women and youth crime.
This grant funding will combat the crime of violence against women and other crimes in B.C. communities by offering financial support to many community-based programs that can make a difference in the lives of thousands of British Columbians. Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton
Our funding has been ear-marked as At-Risk Youth Engagement and will focus on our lifeskills programs, specifically our “self-worthshops”. These workshops take place several times a week and aim to increase self-esteem, safety, inclusion, and connectedness among youth.
The Threshold Housing Society is delighted to announce Jo-Ann Roberts has been engaged to develop their profile and advancement efforts to meet the ever-growing demand for housing homeless youth in Greater Victoria.
Jo-Ann Roberts comes with a wealth of experience not only in her chosen profession of journalism but in community relations and networking. She is best known as the former host of the CBC Radio show All Points West between 2004 and 2014. In 2015, she was the candidate for the Green Party in Victoria. In 2013, Ms. Roberts was the Harvey Southam Lecturer in Journalism and Non-fiction at the University of Victoria. She is a former BC Director of the Canadian Media Guild and the recipient of awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada.
Her engagement with Threshold is timely as the non-profit organization responds to the growing number of homeless youth in the region. For more information, go to thresholdhousing.ca

There is so much great information and research out there about homelessness and poverty in general. And even about youth homelessness and transitional housing. But how is an organization, let alone the public in general, able to find and stay up-to-date on the newest information?
UVic’s Centre for Youth and Society has a program that is helping organizations like Threshold Housing do just that.
Shauna Janz is the executive director of Friends of Living and Learning Through Loss Society
Many of our youth come to THS having experienced a variety of types of loss. Part of the process of moving to self-reliance and self-worth on a practical level involves dealing with these personal issues. Working with Learning Through Loss, our youth workers are able to provide transitioning youth with the tools, mentorship, and community they need to process their grief.
Recently the Friends of Living and Learning Through Loss Society has received $3,300 in funding from the Victoria Foundation which will go towards community programs and youth education.
We at Threshold Housing Society would like to extend our utmost gratitude and appreciation for the tremendous support we have received from the Victoria community this holiday season.

Each bag was filled with amazing goodies and products that the girls were ecstatic about. The girls at Holly House also extend their gratitude to the Girl Guides who dropped off four beautiful gift baskets for them.
