Over the years, one tradition that has taken hold at Threshold surrounds the gift of a hand-stitched quilt given to each young resident who leaves our houses. The program was started by a group of quilters who felt it important that youth in transition have a tangible object that would represent care, hope and the need for a sanctuary.
Thanks to a number of quilters who have given of their time and skills, Threshold has been able to put dozens and dozens of quilts like the one in the figure into the hands of youths who leave to find their place in the world. Receiving a quilt has become an emotional affair for some—an important rite of passage. The quilt acts as a symbol, letting the young woman or man know that their life is precious, that someone cares about them, and that they deserve a safe place to live. Often, the quilt is the only object of beauty they possess.
Starting October 1, 2013, through to Halloween, the Threshold Housing Society will have special tins placed at all the cashiers at Thrifty Food Stores in Greater Victoria. The money goes to supplying material and supplies to stitch quilts for youth in transition. Also, if you would like to use a Thrifty’s Smile Card in aid of youth housing, please call 250-383-8830 or info@thresholdhousing.ca to receive a Smile Card with Threshold’s special bar code.
If you are in a Thrifty store, please think of the youth in transition and donate what you can to this cause. We all sleep better in the warmth of love.
